Book your calendars because next 𝐂𝐲𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐌𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐔𝐩 is coming!
You can join us in our usual place – 𝐏𝐚𝐥𝐨 𝐀𝐥𝐭𝐨 𝐂𝐥𝐮𝐛 (Telliskivi 57, Tallinn) on 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝟐𝟏𝐬𝐭! CyberMeetUp is an event for the whole cybersecurity community – the old and the new members are certainly welcome.
The event is divided into two parts:
𝟏𝟖:𝟎𝟎-𝟏𝟗:𝟎𝟎 is the first part where cybersecurity experts from Finland, Australia and Estonia will be taking the stage. This part is conducted fully in English and it is streamed live on Facebook and YouTube (hint: better in person).
𝐖𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐟𝐮𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐝𝐨, 𝐥𝐞𝐭 𝐮𝐬 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐚𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐮𝐩𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐲𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐌𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐔𝐩:
Starting off the evening, 𝐀𝐥𝐞𝐤𝐬𝐢 𝐑𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐞𝐦𝐢 (NCSC-FI, National Cyber Security Centre of Finland), will provide an overview of the cyber threats looming over Finland.
Providing a broader view of the threats and situation in the Nordic region is a representative of the Northern European Cybersecurity Cluster (NECC), 𝐉𝐮𝐡𝐚 𝐑𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐬 (Chairman of the Board), accompanied by 𝐑𝐞𝐢𝐣𝐨 𝐒𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐚 (CEO).
🇦🇺 In the third segment, under our traditional rubric “State of the Cyber Space,” we’ll be looking much-much further. We are pleased to announce the presence of 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐧 𝐃𝐨𝐰𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠, the Australian Ambassador for Cyber Affairs and Critical Technology, who will be joining us on the stage to discuss the cybersecurity situation in a whole other side of the globe. Let us see what similarities or differences we could identify.
🇪🇪 Concluding Part I of the event, 𝐇𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐤 𝐏𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐧, the R&D Expert Coordinator at RIA, will present the findings of our AI and machine learning technology risks and opportunities research we conducted in cooperation with Cybernetica. The findings are currently available in Estonian on the RIA webpage.
𝟏𝟗:𝟎𝟎-… Since CyberMeetUp has somewhat evolved into an informal monthly gathering for the cyber community, the second half of the event is dedicated to 𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠. At 19:00, alongside 𝐬𝐧𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐬, we get to exchange contacts, thoughts, and experiences (good, bad and the ugly).

Workshops
The participants of the conference will be offered to register for one of the following workshops.
Sustainable solutions: LCA insights into biorefinery technology
LCA is a vital tool for assessing the environmental impact of products and processes, Dr. Karīna Bāliņa from the Circularity Transitions Research Group at the University of Latvia will provide a unique opportunity to dive into LCA’s complexity.
‘’In this workshop, we will gain a comprehensive understanding of LCA’s core principles and tackle the challenges that often arise in the field. Through various case studies, we’ll witness LCA in action and learn how it informs sustainable decision-making across various industries. We’ll explore the role of waste treatment in LCA, emphasizing the importance of end-of-life considerations. Additionally, we’ll discuss the distinctions between product-centred and material-centred perspectives in LCA and the implications of each. Delving into biotechnologies, we’ll uncover the challenges related to data availability and methodological concerns. Furthermore, we’ll investigate LCA applications associated with greenwashing, helping to distinguish authentic sustainability claims from misleading ones.’’
Converting research findings into clear & concise figures and tables
Dr. Ali Kandemir from the Bristol Composites Institute at the University of Bristol will demonstrate how to better communicate research results by clear and impactful visuals, using different softwares.
’’In this interactive workshop designed for young researchers, you will learn the art of transforming complex research findings into clear and concise figures and tables. Fostering Academic Integrity Excellence through Young Researcher Organizations
Plenary lecture by Dr. Anna Stikāne
Anna is the head of Innovation Hub at the Latvian Institute of Organic Synthesis. Her academic background lies in synthetic biology and biotechnology, which she relies on in her daily work in smoothing the path of research innovations from labs to the market. In 2020 Anna was awarded a PhD in biomedical sciences from University of Leeds, UK. As an active member of the Latvian Association of Young Researchers, Anna strives for openness in Latvia’s science environment, and her talk will touch on the importance of academic integrity, and how joining or building a network of like-minded colleagues can be a valuable strategy in addressing various issues and creating a wider research impact. Research is a collaborative but also highly competitive activity. In theory, only the best of the best get permanent positions. To excel, one needs the support from advisers and group leaders, which makes many young researchers highly dependent on a few people. When young researchers uncover unethical practices of their higher-ups, many face a dilemma of whether and how to report it.

For the 17th time so far, we seek to catch up with the modern world, to dig deeper into the changes and obstacles the progress of technology brings, to get inspired (or frightened) by the innovation pioneers and their mind-bending insights of today’s world, explore the ideas which can lead to the first unicorn and to have a glance at what awaits in the future.

What is it?
Do you enjoy talking software? Learning tricks about your favorite programming languages? Solving interesting coding problems? Sharing your experiences with other likeminded people? Welcome to the first ever Nordic RSE in person conference! We believe you might really like it here.
We are an association of professionals developing and using software for the needs of research. As such we aim to create a community of researchers, engineers, developers, digital experts and more, to talk about topics that are often overlooked in classical academic conferences. The focus of our conference is not on results of research, but rather on the tools that underlie those results. Additionally, we hope to foster a rich network of exchanges and conversations surrounding the practices of software development in research.
Most research is already built on a foundation of sofware tools and the quality and reliability of those tools is key to producing reliable results. And the importance of software keeps growing. In this conference we want to talk about what pipelines you develop and use for your research, and how you use it, the software you develop, and how you got about developing it.
Where
On the campus of Aalto University in Otaniemi, Espoo, Finland.
How you can help
- Submit a contribution! In line with our previous online unconferences, our meetings are driven by our participants! What do you want to talk about?
- Encourage your colleagues to submit a contribution and/or join our association. Since the term RSE is still fairly new, they might not know about it yet and be hesitant to submit something.
- Share the announcement with others.
- Do you want to volunteer and help us run our first in person conference? Join us or get in touch with us!
Call for Contributions
We invite you to submit contributions by March 22nd, on any topics related to research software. Whether you are using it or developing it yourself, we are interested in your experience and expertise. Topics are divided roughly into 3 sessions, “Best Practices”, “Technical” and “Soft Skills”. But don’t let this limit you, many topics are welcome. Just submit your idea and we can discuss and find a spot for it!
All formats of communication are welcome (or check what we have done in the unconference):
- Discussion topics (15-20 minutes): is software, research software community or research software engineering something close to your heart? Come chat with other enthusiasts!
- Demonstrations: show us some tools or software that you like
- Workshops or ReproHacks (max 3 hours in a day)
- Talks (20 minutes including 5 min questions): teach us something new
- On-going projects: share something unfinished or almost working that you would like to get feedback on
- Something else: is there something you would like to share that does not fit any of the previous points? We are looking forward to hearing about it!
The open (or ‘unconference’) session will include on day contributions, topics that arise during the conference.
And of course we will all follow a Code of Conduct.

The schedule is subject to change until the submitted contributions are reviewed.

Venue
Main venue: Aalto University, Konemiehentie 1, Espoo, Finland (building called “Kide” but most people don’t know that name). All rooms are right in the lobby area.
Thursday morning, before noon: “Top Lounge”, Otakaari1, Espoo, Finland (building name: Undergraduate Center). You need a keycard to enter this area, and access info will be updated closer to time.
Lunches are in the campus area, a short walk to other buildings.
All areas have step-free access.
Registration
Registration includes both lunches, snacks, and coffee, and all activities. It doesn’t include dinner, which has to be self-paid. Depending on sponsorship, prices and/or included perks may be updated.
There is an evening sauna, but places are limited to ~25 people. The first registrants get priority and spots will be allocated later.
Arrival time
tldr: Arrive Wednesday evening, or very early Thursday for the informal session. Otherwise arriving before noon works.
If you arrive before or during Thursday morning, we have a informal session before noon, which may include demonstrations, social activities, hack time, getting to know each other, or more. If you arrive before noon, you can join us for lunch. Talks begin at 13:00.
If you arrive Wednesday evening, some organizers will be around and we’ll try to arrange some activity together.
Other activities
Our plan includes lunches, conference dinner, sauna.
Wikivoyage Helsinki is usually pretty accurate and has information about the area and other sights to see.
Hotels
There are various hotels within easy walking distance. We don’t have any particular discounts. “Radison Blu Otaniemi” is the default location for university visitors. Other hotels in Helsinki downtown are fine also, the metro trip is 11 minutes (and costs ~3 euros).
Transportation
Aalto University is at the “Aalto University” metro stop.
Air: Helsinki Airport is the default choice. Between the airport and Aalto University, plan for max 1.5 hours (less than one hour is possible if you are efficient). From the airport, follow signs to the train station. Buy a ticket for zones ABC, this will get you all the way to the university (see public transport). Take the first train that comes (either way gets to downtown in about the same time). Walk a bit to the main station and down to the metro station. Take a metro to the stop Aalto University (direction Tapiola or Kivenlahti), then continue in section “public transport”
Ferry: From Tallinn or Stockholm, there are ferries. Expect well under an hour to get from the ferry harbors to Aalto University. (Some attendees are also attending the Nordic e-infrastructure Conference in Tallinn on 27-29 May, they will be taking ferries from Tallinn the evening of 29 May. More info to be announced)
Bus, Train, etc. within Finland: You probably know how to get to the center of Helsinki. Follow public transit below.
Private vehicle: There isn’t free parking, but there are paid lots around.
Public transport: The public transport system is good and easy to use. The stop name is “Aalto University”, and the A entrance may be slightly easier to use. Tickets can be bought at ticket machines, or via the “HSL App”. Aalto University is in the zone B, downtown is in the zone A, tickets last a bit more than an hour and work on any public bus, train, metro, or tram (and as many transfers as you need). AB zone tickets cost 2.95€.
If coming from airport: use single tickets, day tickets not worth it even with one extra trip to/from downtown.

This is an event designed to highlight the next generation of startups in Tampere and connect founders with investors & industry experts.
Back and bolder than before, the Startup Tampere Showcase 2024 is gearing up to be the unmissable pitstop for every tech aficionado, founder, investor, and disruptor in the game.
In the backdrop of the pulsating Tampere region, last year’s standout event celebrated startups galore in areas like Smart City Development, ICT, and Deep Tech. This year? Expect the stakes, and the pitches, to be even higher.
Picture this: 100 startups, from seasoned scale-ups to the freshest bootstraps, converging in a hustle of innovation, and 25 of them getting the spotlight moment on stage they’ve dreamt of. Between high-octane pitches, there’s a treasure trove of happenings – speed-dating sessions that might birth your next big collab, panel discussions that challenge the status quo, and ad hoc meetings where serendipity meets strategy. And because it’s not all business, wind down at the Afterwork, where clinks of drinks meet rooftop views, melodies, and memories.
For those who’ve got their finger on the pulse of Europe’s startup scene, thinking of Tampere might just be synonymous with raw innovation, and this event? It’s where the magic gets tangible. Whether you’re a startup out to shake things up, an investor ready to bet on the next big thing, or simply a tech enthusiast hungry for what’s next, Tampere 2024 is your playground. Buckle up and mark the date; this is where the Nordics shine!
Lighting the Nordics with Resilient Innovation!
Dive into Tampere’s rich legacy, a place where the Nordics’ first lightbulb flickered to life and ignited a relentless pursuit for the new and uncharted. In a world that shifts by the minute, Tampere’s startup mindset shines bright, adapting with dynamism and a kind of resilience deeply etched into its DNA. In this city, we don’t just innovate; we’re driven by dreams, fueled by decisions, and powered into action. As Tampere transitions from traditional manufacturing to smart tech, we’re casting the net wider than ever, encompassing everything from cell phone tech to niche signal processing.
At Startup Tampere Showcase 2024, expect a unique fusion where past successes pave the way for future breakthroughs. Here, startups aren’t just presented; they’re celebrated. With the city’s vast infrastructure, support, and community behind every idea, startups find not just a platform but a catalyst for growth. We’re not just about providing testbeds for rapid prototyping; we’re about marrying the brightest minds with the most audacious ideas. With 30,000 higher education students in Tampere, vitality and innovation are in the air. And it’s not just about the numbers; it’s about the connections. In Tampere, you’re two phone calls away from anyone – a compact strength we wield with pride.
Whether you’re a tech titan, a visionary startup, a corporate leader scouting for fresh innovations, or an international investor aiming to tap into the Finnish magic, Tampere’s got your back. Join us for an unparalleled blend of tech showcases, expert panels, networking sessions, and the renowned Afterwork. Experience firsthand why Tampere is more than just a city; it’s a state of mind, an attitude, and the future’s birthplace.

Delivering Knowledge Through Live Demonstrations
Tangent Link in cooperation with the Estonian Ministry of Defence, and the Estonian Defence Forces is delighted to invite you to EWLive: Prevailing in the EME. This is the 5th edition of EWLive, which has expanded to encompass key elements of the EME (Electro-Magnetic Environment). This has become a ‘must attend’ event for Defence and Security industry stakeholders to gain knowledge through a live demonstration setting.
Opportunity
EWLive is an excellent opportunity for companies to demonstrate and deliver a visual reference to enhance the quality of their technology presentation. The live approach gives military end users from over 30 nations a hands on experience, not a simple sales pitch at a trade show, to help them understand the technology available and how it can address their capability requirements.
The Platform
EWLive demonstrations take place at a secure facility, Ülenurme Airport, Tartu, Estonia. NATO and NATO friendly countries who have significant future requirements to improve their EW/EME/CEMA capability, will be invited to attend these demonstrations. Each military delegation will be matched according to subject matter expertise, with a commercial demonstration to ensure the maximum learning outcomes are achieved during each live session.
Capabilities
Demonstrate your EME capablities in a field or classroom environment, in these technologies.

Event Details
The Drop is Europe’s leading Climate Tech event, designed for people who want to meet and learn from the founders, investors and climate experts who are driving solutions to the climate crisis forward.
Last year, over 500 climate founders, investors, and experts were in attendance bringing over 100 billion USD in investable funds for climate under one roof and proudly boasting a balanced 1:1 ratio of founders to investors.
The goal of The Drop is to bring together climate-focused investors from across Europe, as well as those who have yet to dedicate their funds to climate-related initiatives, in order to foster inspiration, knowledge-sharing, and connections. This gathering is not just a one-time experiment; it will now be an annual event where startups, investors, and thought leaders come together to explore innovative solutions.
While the conference is invite-only, individuals who share the passion for addressing the climate crisis are encouraged to join the waiting list and reach out for potential participation. The Drop 2023, set to take place on September 7th in Malmö, promises a day filled with joy, passion, and action. Attendees can expect engaging discussions, serious talks, and opportunities to explore investment options that can contribute to solving the climate crisis.
By creating a space where passionate individuals can connect, collaborate, and invest in addressing the climate crisis, The Drop conference aims to be a catalyst for meaningful change and a driving force towards a sustainable future.
