Porkchop, a startup founded by KTH students, has built its first product porkchop X, a fully integrated propulsion system for nanosatellites. On January 13, 2022, at 16.30 Swedish time, its propulsion system launched into space with the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

Porkchop is a startup that was founded by KTH students Matija Milenovic and Victor Gonzales in 2019. With the aim to become an in-space logistics company they have built their first product; porkchop X.

Porkchop X is a fully integrated propulsion system for nanosatellites. Nanosatellites are relatively small devices that have many different uses such as providing internet access in remote areas and tracking natural disasters in real-time. With the product they have built, they are trying to improve the lifespan of nanosatellites by giving them extra functionality.

Built by KTH Innovation’s support

On January 13, 2022, at 16.30 Swedish time, the propulsion system built by porkchop has been launched from Cape Canaveral with the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. They will get to test some of the functions of their innovative technology in space with this launch. Then they are planning to build on this technology “to become an in-space logistics company for the satellites of tomorrow”.

What made it possible for the Porkchop team to be able to build their first innovative solution was mainly the support they have received from the KTH Innovation program. They joined the program in October 2019 and received support such as access to office space, maker space and production studio, weekly workshops, a supportive community as well as coaching. Matija Milenovic, co-founder and CEO of porkchop, says that porkchop wouldn’t exist today if they hadn’t joined the program. He then goes on to add:

“It was immensely helpful. Even if you do come to the conclusion that it is not for you, you will still have learned a lot from trying to start a business. You have nothing to lose. In our experience, the program and coaching are truly world class.”
