Ecobase from Estonia receives €2.5 million in seed funding to expand European reforestation efforts

Ecobase, a startup focused on reforestation based in Tallinn, recently raised €2.5 million in seed funding. The investment was led by Combiwood Grupp, a prominent conglomerate in Estonia’s woodworking industry. Ecobase helps European landowners access funding for carbon initiatives by providing them with a platform and support network. This enables the implementation of afforestation and reforestation activities in areas that are degraded or abandoned, while encouraging a shift to more sustainable forestry practices. With this funding, Ecobase plans to develop new products and enhance its platform’s capabilities. The goal is to empower landowners further by creating diverse forests and offering alternative income opportunities beyond traditional timber-based earnings.

Ecobase focuses on restoring and preserving European forests through carbon projects. They’re actively engaged in managing projects spanning 163,073 hectares across 19 countries. The company aims to counteract the substantial loss of European forests; while historically over 90% of Europe was forested, the current coverage stands at around 50%. This decline has resulted in about 3.5 million square kilometers of damaged or altered forest ecosystems, with destruction rates varying significantly based on forest types. Ecobase’s primary mission is centered on the restoration of native ecosystems to bolster climate resilience in these regions.

“Ecobase encourages the creation of native, mixed forests by providing the landowner with an alternative income which does not rely on timber value. We aim to drive significant positive environmental change while also providing economic incentives for landowners,” says Jaan Sepping, the founder and CEO of Ecobase.
