Maria 01 Impact Report unveils €1 billion in revenue and a surge of startups in 2023

Nordic startup hub Maria 01 has evolved into an even more nurturing nest for startups. According to their recent impact report, the community housed more startups last year than ever before, with a growing number of new applications in their backlog. Maria 01 offers the best possible support a startup could ask for, a critical factor given the current uncertain market conditions, economic fluctuations, and the myriad challenges facing the world. This support goes beyond mere assistance; it fosters a profound sense of belonging, acknowledging that even the most revolutionary ideas need a home, especially in today’s tumultuous times.

Since its launch in 2016, startups and alumni at Maria 01 have generated over €1 billion in revenue. Additionally, these startups have raised a substantial €917 million in funding, highlighting the strong support and investment environment at Maria 01. The community has been growing rapidly, with 185 startups calling it home by the end of 2023, and 72 of them joining during the year. The community is incredibly diverse, with over 1400 members from more than 42 countries.

These startups are not only successful but also contribute significantly to the economy, having paid out nearly €466 million in salaries since 2016. The report also shows a 20% increase in new startup applications in 2023 compared to previous years, indicating the growing interest and success of the Maria 01 community. This growth aligns perfectly with Maria 01’s overarching mission: to support the visionaries behind the next wave of world-changing companies, ultimately positioning Helsinki as the premier global startup hub.

In 2023, Maria 01 startups collectively raised an impressive €161 million in funding across 30 funding rounds. While this figure represents a decrease from the previous year’s €219 million, the decline is overshadowed by the influx of new startups into the community. Noteworthy funding recipients in 2023 include mobility startup AIMotive, which secured €55 million, followed by SaaS startup Linear with $35 million. Greentech company carboculture raised €18 million, while AI company IPRally secured €10 million, and $7.4 million, respectively. Notably, Swappie holds the record for the largest funding round in the community, having raised €169 million across four rounds.

While revenue figures for 2023 are yet to be released, 2022 saw Maria 01 startups generating €293 million in revenue, bringing the total all-time revenue to €1092 million. Once again, the greentech company Swappie led the pack with €91 million in revenue in 2022, totaling €366.27 million all-time. Gaming startup Lightheart followed closely behind, generating €15 million in 2022 and €41.2 million all-time.

Maria 01’s reputation as a welcoming hub for startups has led to a significant increase in interest from entrepreneurs looking to join the community. In 2023, 72 startups became members of Maria 01, indicating a growing trend. The previous year saw 177 applications for membership, with 40.7% of them being accepted. By the close of 2023, 20 startups from within the community had been acquired, and its active membership stood at 185, underscoring its status as a dynamic ecosystem that fosters and champions innovative ventures.
