Pizza Delivery Services Change Hands Between Online Delivery Moguls

Ordering a pizza online and having it delivered is simple to consumers, but peeling back the covers you’ll see there has been movements in the world that delivers pizza to your door. Delivery Hero, a Berlin-based startup recently raised €25 million bringing their total capital raised to €40 million. With that cash Delivery Hero has financed the acquisition on OnlinePizza Norden Group, a food ordering business that operates in Sweden, Finland, Austria, and Poland under the names OnlinePizza, Mat24, PizzaOnline, PizzaPortal, Mjam, and WillEssen.

TheNextWeb points out that the Delivery Hero co-founder and CEO Niklas Östberg was once the chairman of OnlinePizza Norden, so the move is not unsurprising considering Delivery Hero’s recent acquisitions of Lieferheld and Hungry House.

But what makes this more interesting is that Just-Eat, a food delivery service that operates in 13 markets, owned a minority share in Online Pizza and sold their 18.5% to Delivery Hero.

Klaus Nyengaard, CEO of Just-Eat (and guest on Unfair Advantage), said “Online takeaway is booming as local restaurants embrace e-commerce. Our investment in Online Pizza has yielded a very attractive return, giving us additional cash that will be put towards the continued development of the business in key markets and cementing our position as the global leader.”
