The Swedish video-on-demand service Voddler, has just announced a number of agreements with different Hollywood studios to distribute their content. In short, Voddler uses an open source XBMC media centre solution to distribute its content, so the user needs a set-top box to be eligible to receive Voddler’s offering. This could be said to be one of the largest agreements in the space of video for a Nordic company.
To be exact, Voddler has signed deals with The Walt Disney Company and Paramount Pictures. This means that they’re able to share movies from Disney, Touchstone Pictures, Miramax Films, Paramount Pictures and Dreamwork Studios. To support the growth of their catalogue, they are also addding support for half a million users more. Mind you, they are still in beta so this might have actually been a prerequisite from the studios to allow the distribution of their content.
Another interesting point to ponder is that did Voddler have any leverage to close the deal being from Sweden? As we all know, ThePirateBay is from Sweden and very popular there. Bringing in alternatives to pirating movies is always in the interest of the movie studios. Nevertheless, this just shows that piracy could very well be one of your biggest opportunities in creating a successful business!
