Video Surveillance Cameras and Analytics For Business

On a global scale, businesses have deployed video surveillance cameras, primarily for security purposes. And in many cases, these cameras work in isolation where no one knows if they are even working until some incident happens and footage is required. Very few use the cameras to capture useful information either to understand business operations and draw behavioral information.

The only exception is high-security areas like airports and country borders, where cameras have additional intelligence. The need is the same for many businesses, but they often lack the necessary resources or knowledge to implement a feasible solution.

Camera manufacturers are coming with intelligent cameras where the specific event can be triggered. But for businesses to use these features, new cameras have to be installed, leading to unnecessary extra costs. This is the biggest roadblock, especially when market awareness of technology is limited. In addition, current camera manufacturers treat analytics as a commodity, simply put something into the hardware and provide no value-added solution, which is typically the requirement. With AI technology advancing very fast, any improvements or changes to the analytics will require either replacement or upgradation of the cameras – both of which are very cumbersome if not impossible in some cases. This is the biggest drawback of the edge-based, in-camera analytics approach.
