Stockholm-based Seidr has closed a seed investment led by Andreessen Horowitz, a venture capital firm that backs bold entrepreneurs building the future through technology. Seidr is a collective of Swedish gaming veterans dedicated to crafting the next generation of intense multiplayer experiences for PC and console. The startup will continue to create its next-gen cross-platform games.

Fueled by the experiences of Adam Schaub and Marcus Jacobs, who served as senior leaders in some of the world’s recognized game companies such as Electronic Arts and King, the startup has just set out with the mission of taking the gaming experience beyond platforms. The duo’s deep expertise in building high-performance gaming teams and scaling their gaming business has managed to attract a major investment firm like a16z.

“In getting to know them, we were impressed by Adam and Marcus’ deep experience building out high-performing game teams and scaling games businesses. Adam is a repeat founder who previously built a venture-backed games startup and launched games that were downloaded millions of times. Marcus was the GM of the Candy Crush franchise at King and grew the business from its early days into one of the most impactful and enduring franchises in all mobile games.” state Joshua Lu and Andrew Chen from a16z.

In order to ensure maximum efficiency from the gaming experience, it is necessary to free the players from their chains and develop a system that embraces multiple platforms as in many other areas. Adam and Marcus predict that this can be achieved by deactivating the form factor, which is freed from dependency on platforms and promising an experience beyond time and place. Seidr will make multiplayer console games that players from different platforms can play together.

Founded in Silicon Valley in 2009 by Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz, Andreessen Horowitz (known as “a16z”) is a venture capital firm that backs bold entrepreneurs building the future through technology.
