Stockholm-born virtual acute-care hospital company Medoma secured €6 million in a seed round led by the Nordic VC firm Inventure and joined by Bonnier Ventures along with existing investors including VNV Global and Sophia Bendz through Cherry Ventures. The startup’s software enables patients that require complex medical treatment and diagnostics to have easy access to acute hospital-level care in their homes. Medoma will use the funding for the development of the technology and go for a test run of its virtual acute wards. The Swedish startup is also targeting to scale up and spread its healthcare model across Europe.

Founded in 2021, Medoma is a virtual ward company offering patient-centered care tailored for patient’s needs in the comfort of their homes. The care is conducted with a combination of physical visits from medical staff (doctors, nurses, and physiotherapists) as well as digital consultations, coordinated through a technological platform monitoring vital parameters, as well as optimizing “care-out-of-home” logistics.

Medoma, Inventure, Kevin Lösch“We believe digitally-enabled and technology-first care is at the very heart of this transformation of the healthcare system. Improving the infrastructure of the critical healthcare system to contribute towards a better quality of care as well as direct access to care when needed is mission critical, with digitization at its core. We are happy to be part of Medoma’s journey by disrupting a complex and old-fashion sector.” says Kevin Lösch, Investor at Inventure.

Medoma, Johan Nordenström“Few have missed the digitalization of primary care. We are convinced that the next wave of future healthcare will take place for those needing acute care, patients in inpatient care. With Medoma’s virtual care units, patients can get assistance in their homes instead of in a hospital, for all or parts of their acute care treatment,” says Johan Nordenström, Medoma’s CEO and co-founder.

Bonnier Ventures will become a partner in the Swedish company Medoma, which uses advanced medical technology to offer acutely ill patients the opportunity to be cared for in their homes instead of in hospitals.

Medoma, Bonnier Ventures, Sofia Hasselberg“We are proud to support Medoma’s outstanding team in their mission to improve healthcare,” says Sofia Hasselberg, Investment Director at Bonnier Ventures. “Overcrowding and lack of space in hospitals pose increasing challenges for the healthcare system, threatening patient safety and increasing workloads for healthcare staff.

Medoma aims to ease this problem by developing technology and working methods that give acutely ill patients the opportunity to be cared for in their own homes instead of being admitted to hospital wards. The ‘virtual care wards’ model is well proven and has been appreciated by both patients and healthcare professionals in, for example, the United States. Now it is also becoming a reality in Sweden.”
