Garage48 Helsinki will take place this weekend in the Aalto Venture Garage, where about a hundred enthusiasts will compete in a friendly manner to build the best business/product -combination in only 48 hours. We’ll be bringing you updates through out the weekend and they will be added to this post. Garage48 has originated from Estonia and already two such events have been organised. The reason why Garage48 is worth following so widely, is the cross border effect it has – Estonians, Finns, Latvians, Lithuanians as well as some from the US and UK, all coming together for a weekend to build something great.

We’ll update this post at random intervals and we’ll try to push out video updates from the venue as well. Below is the schedule for the weekend so those following us can see where we are in terms of the progress.

Fri 18:25
Event starting, introductory words and soon we’ll be starting with the idea pitches. Crowd is very excited and despite being dark outside – this weekend will be very lively, you can already feel it.

Fri 19:40
Lots of ideas being presented. There were about 10 to 15 ideas with slides, now we’re onto the ones from Facebook (the Garage48 Helsinki group). There are about 10 people in the queue for presenting now. Lots of good questions also presented from the crowd. Hard to say how things will progress as the chosen ideas will be chosen in a few hours.

In total, there are about 100+ people altogether in the Aalto Venture Garage.

Sat 01:40
Just got home from the event. About 20 or so people still were left at the event coding and working on their product idea. Our team, which is trying to build a social layer on top of Instapaper, got relatively far and in the morning we can continue working directly with clear plans. It’s hectic, it’s stressful, but it’s hell of a lot of fun coming together with new people to create something amazing. Good night for now – let’s continue in the morning. Hoping to add some video updates too.

Sat 10:12
Things are slowly getting underway here in Aalto Venture Garage. Below is a short video I shot during the morning. More to come later today! Here are all the ideas that pitched and the ones that were approved for development.

Sat 13.20
Here’s a more active video about people working everywhere in the Aalto Venture Garage. Lot’s of small results being seen here and there. Sunday will definitely be very interesting based on what I’ve seen so far.

Sat 19:30
It’s been a busy afternoon. Most of the afternoon was spent completely focused and immersed in the projects. There was a little break at 4pm when Lauri Järvilehto and Reidar Wasenius gave some tips on productivity and improving of your brain activity.

Most teams are looking forwards to Sunday evening as it’s really difficult to tell who will demo what and how far along each team is.

Sun 09:51
Sunday morning is a lot more quieter than Saturday. The fatique is taking its toll, definitely. However, with only 7 hours to go until demo time, there isn’t a lot of possibility for slack. Quite a few teams already working and fixing bugs here and there to get their demos ready.

There was some very cool progress made yesterday. Perhaps the team with the most visible results was Montroller. Their team is building a a way to control robots with your devices, mainly mobile ones and with their accelerometers. Below is a teaser video about their project.

Below is also a short video about the quiet morning and people slowly continuing working on their projects again.

Sun 13:54
Lunch had, nobody’s messing about anymore – everyone is focused on their demos and fixing them to perfection. Only 3 more hours to go before 16 teams will demo each project in a three minute presentation, followed by 3 minutes of questions and answers.

We’ll announce the winners as soon as the jury makes their decision.

Sun 21:34
Wow, that was some event. Fantastic stuff. The winner of the event was Lap Lab, they enable race car teams to measure their gps analytics and data over a SaaS-model service. Montroller won the main Nokia prize and Flo Flo won the Microsoft Azure prize. We’ll write a complete summary of the event for tomorrow.

Feel tired, but extremely happy I took part – met a ton of interesting people and made lots of new friends. Events like Garage48 are definitely needed to enable a functional startup ecosystem in the Baltics and Nordics.
