FishBrain Raises Capital from Almi, Swedish Angels

With Slush ’13 buzz slowly growing, last year’s winner is still in good form, raising another round of seed funding from Almi Invest, and a few notable names in the Swedish startup scene. Stockholm-based Fishbrain’s app and online service allows users to track and share their fishing catches, creating sort of a social network around the sport fishing scene. The details of the investment were not announced.

We last covered the startup in February when they received a funding round led again by Almi Invest. Today they’ve gathered over 100,000 registered users and 50,000 logged catches.

On top of Almi Invest, investors in FishBrain include Mattias Miksche, founder and CEO at Stardoll; Rikard Steiber, EVP and Chief Digital Officer at MTG; Hans Lindroth, CEO at Lingfield; Henrik Torstensson, CEO at ShapeUp Club; and Mathias Ackermand, business angel and prior to that founder and CFO at Transmode.

“As a fisherman I know the big need for an app like FishBrain. Which angler does not want a little help to catch more and bigger fish? I’m proud and very happy to have the opportunity to engage in this ground-breaking company”, says Mattias Miksche, CEO and founder at Stardoll.

The funding will be used to expand to the U.S., a market they’re eying for its 40 million anglers, a number higher than the amount of people that play golf and tennis combined. Afterwards, Fishbrain is eying China, Japan, and Russia for their sport fishing markets.

Fishing is a largely seasonal sport, so it will be interesting to see how the app grows throughout the fall and winter.
