Finland Goes After Tablets: Nokia & Jolla Announce New Devices

Nokia was always extremely important in Finland, so with the Microsoft acquisition, everyone was wondering what they would do next. At the same time, a new player on the market – Jolla was taking a stab at the mobile phone market, and it looked like they could continue where Nokia left off. However with both devices announced at Slush, they will go head to head between each other and the rest of the world in a tablet space.

Both companies announced a new tablet. The Nokia N1 will have exactly the same dimensions and resolution as an iPad mini, pricing it aggressively at $249 compared to $399 for an iPad. It is striking how similar the two devices are, and if we are not going to be stuck in litigation wars, they will go head-to-head in the market. The device will be running Android, check out the announcement video below:

Jolla is taking a slightly different approach, they will be launching the Jolla Tablet on Indiegogo, making it the first crowdsourced Tablet in the world. With $189 price tag on the campaign, and familiar dimensions and specs: 7.85 inches, 2048 x 1536 resolution. The device will run the Sailfish OS 2.0, which focuses on multitasking, privacy, while promising that you will still be able to run Android apps on it.

While writing the article, Jolla’s campaign already gained about 45% of its funding goals, which are surprisingly low at just $380 000 EUR, compared to say Ubuntu Edge that was looking for almost ten times that – $32 million.

Here is a nice comparison table of the devices (Taken from the Jolla crowdfunding campaign):
