What are the challenges?
All challenges and their individual prizes provided by partners will be published on the website by mid-May. Remember that you do not need to choose your challenge when applying to the event, you will choose the challenge later – or even at the event itself.
Challenge winners and their prizes are determined by the partner companies.
What about participating in multiple challenges?
Nope. Choose!
What are the prizes?
Main prize for the hackathon winning team is 5 000€ in cash, powered by our partners Ubiquity! In addition to the main prize, the challenge partners give out individual prizes to the best ideas in each challenge. Challenge prizes typically range from the company’s products to cash.

EMBRACING INNOVATION
August 25
– Science to Business
– Practical Startup Skills
– Pitching Competitions
– sTARTUp Night
The Embracing Innovation program on August 25 is packed with practical knowledge on how scientific advances and new technologies shape the future of business in various sectors.
From science to business
When research, business, talent and life come together, it shortens the way from idea to solution. But how to turn scientists into entrepreneurs? Sharing his expertise is, among others, Lauri Reuter (Nordic FoodTech VC), who may just as well be called an expert in the future of food. He has a PhD in biotechnology and is a scientist-turned-investor and a founder of the first foodtech focused VC fund in the Nordics.
I was surprised by the high quality of local and international startups presented at the event. Months later, I am still in touch with entrepreneurs and investors that I met in Tartu, which is of big value. – Magda Lukaszewicz, Investment Associate, Balderton Capital
The future of mobility
From solar cars to air taxis, one thing is for sure – the future of mobility will strive towards environmentally friendly transportation. And innovative solutions in this field are numerous! Eduardo Dominguez Puerta (Vertical Aerospace) talks about launching the world’s first commercial flying taxis, whereas Mari-Ly Klaats (Auve Tech) focuses on autonomous vehicles and Kristel Leif (Solaride) on solar cars.
However, technology is often a few steps ahead of the law. Taavi Rõivas (Auve Tech), Indrek Gailan (Estonian Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications), and Pirko Konsa (Modern Mobility) discuss how government can foster innovation in mobility. The panel will be moderated by Maarja Rannama (ITS Estonia).
Entertainment industry skills
Experts from various fields – such as gaming (Elisabet Gretarsdottir from DICE, Kristina Lasenko with ex-FB gaming background; Ott Ozolit who’s ex-Ubisoft), animation (Ben Kalina and Will Feng from Titmouse), cyber safety (Mihkel Tikk from Estonian Ministry of Defence) – will be giving all of us a peek behind the curtain of their respective businesses, plus the skills, experiences, and personal stories unlike any other that have made them as successful as they are.
The sTARTUp festival is amazing – I just can’t believe how well organized it is! I mean it’s like I’m in New York or London.
– Hermione Way, Brand Consultant & Former Head of European Communications at Tinder
sTARTUp Night
Legendary sTARTUp Night wraps up the first conference day. The afterparty is bringing together the coolest festival visitors, good music, and lots of surprises! We believe that the best ideas and deals come when business meets celebration, which is why at sTARTUp Day you will find a unique blend of practical knowledge and a festival atmosphere.
EMPOWERING ENTREPRENEURSHIP
August 26
– Inspirational Keynotes
– Entrepreneurial Impact
– Mental Health
– Self-Development
There is a graveyard full of startups that didn’t manage to get from initial traction to sustainable high growth. Many of them tried to sprint through the growth valley of death by focusing solely on top line growth. This keynote speech by Patrick Flesner (LeadX Capital Partners) will introduce you to the FastScaling growth methodology, and will help you avoid some typical growth-related mistakes many founders make.Inspiration
Mountaineer Krisli Melesk, the first Estonian woman to reach the highest peak in the world, will share an inspiring story about her journey to the top of Mount Everest, whereas Wim Hof Method instructor Laura Hof will focus on mental fortitude. Moving on from mother nature to deep tech, Pauliina Martikainen, who is the investment director of Maki.vc, shares the insights about the state of femtech, including how investors are sleeping on the opportunities within this sector.
Entrepreneurial impact
In a time of immense greed, waste and climate change, social entrepreneurship has emerged to the spotlight as a way to battle the deterioration of the planet. After all, where else are we going to live? From vegan milk to food out of thin air, the latest innovations and most recent trends in foodtech will be brought to you by Tuure Parviainen (Volare), Will van den Tweel (Those Vegan Cowboys), Ben Holden (Whywaste), and Zhang Shilei (Solar Foods).
Mental health & psychology
Life of an entrepreneur can be fascinating and rewarding, yet often stressful. How to align your mental, emotional, physical and spiritual well-being? Sharing their expertise will be Keith Wakeman (SuperBetter), Joe Schaeppi (12traits), Kadri Haljas (Triumf Health), Jin Han (Globus International), Marcel Gasser (.Cocoon Ventures) and Hristo Neiland (.Cocoon Ventures).
A buzzing event, full of energy, excellent pitches, great speakers and loads of passion. I loved being part of sTARTUp day!
– David Beckett, Pitch Coach at Best3Minutes
Founder’s skills
Starting a startup is hard as hell. What are the seven mistakes to avoid? How do you choose a co-founder? How to grow as a founder? How to successfully scale startups? Aiming to arm first-time startup founders with practical knowledge are Christoph Klink (Antler VC), Marcel Poelker (Taledo), and many others.
sTARTUp Pitching
We’re bringing to you the brightest startups in the region looking for investments in various pitching competitions! The grand finale of these is our annual sTARTUp Pitching where the TOP 5 startups compete for a €200k investment, €10k equity-free cash and other prizes.
