Eucalyptus was built as an open source cloud product designed for enterprise-class private cloud or hybrid cloud computing. The service enables the creation of on-premise Infrastructure as a Service clouds, with no requirements for retooling the organization’s existing IT infrastructure or for introducing any specialized hardware. Recently the company also partnered with Amazon allowing use of the Amazon API. Together, Eucalyptus allows any Eucalyptus cloud to be turned into a hybrid IaaS deployment, capable of moving workloads between AWS and on-premise data centers.
The company is based in the U.S. and has reportedly tripled its employees in the last year and a half. Eucalyptus has large security-minded organizations as customers, such as the U.S. Department of Defense, NASA, and Rayethon.
“We are rapidly expanding operations to meet the needs of advanced cloud deployments by customers and partners worldwide. This funding will help us move even faster in a rapidly growing cloud market,” said Mickos. “Over the last year, Eucalyptus has solidified its lead as the most widely deployed private cloud software platform and the leader in hybrid architectures.”
