DataMarket Connects Users To Big Datasets

Anyone who’s had to dig for a serious dataset knows it’s not always easy to find what you’re looking for, even if you know it’s out there and is offered for free. DataMarket out of Iceland offers 100 million time series from wide range of public and private data providers, including the United Nations, the World Bank, Eurostat, and the Economist Intelligence Unit. The portal allows all this data to be searched, visualized, compared, and downloaded in a single place in a standard, unified manner. I’m looking at this from the perspective of a university student, but DataMarket is also geared towards business users to find and efficiently publish their data and reach new audiences.

To get access to the datasets, DataMarket offers a free plan that gives anyone access to the comma separated value data and a few other features, like the ability to embed charts. There’s also a pro account at $59 a month that gives you access to Excel formatted data, custom live reports, and a connection to Excel live data so you always have the most recent datasets. Datamarket also offers premium datasets that vary in cost.

For businesses wishing to publish their own data, DataMarket gives the opportunity to host the data, which gives access to DataMarket’s features. For dataset providers, DataMarket provides embedded content and branded versions of DataMarket’s systems, enabling all the functionality of DataMarket.com on top of their own data collections.

The company has been around since 2008, and recently opened up an office in Cambridge Massachusetts to plug in with the government, finance, and research institutions in the Northeast.

Here’s an example of the embedded datasets they offer:
