Rovio’s head of animation, Nick Dorra, spoke at the MIPTV conference in Cannes where he announced Rovio will begin producing weekly short form animations, The Guardian reports. Each episode should last two-and-a-half to three minutes each, and will likely be released on a new video app. Rovio acquired the Finnish animation studio, Kombo in June of 2011 to begin creating their media content.
“It’s about telling more engaging stories… and deeper thoughts, deeper feelings of the characters, such as why are they always angry?” Dorra says at the MIPTV Conference. “Angry Birds is not just about the gameplay, and will be in the future less and less about the slingshot, actually, and more and more about the characters.”
Similar to the company’s strategy for releasing their games, Rovio is also looking to get the shorts available on “all screens”. Aside from apps, Dorra mentioned that this strategy will involve partnerships, such as their deal with Samsung announced in January 2012 that involves an app for the company’s range of Smart TV internet-connected televisions. Rovio has taken a distinctly independent approach to releasing its content, unwilling to work with Hollywood on content creation or distribution.
Dorra also repeated some news that the Angry Birds movie is in development, but won’t be out until 2013 or 2014. It was also mentioned that Rovio will be producing completely new IP this year, things that have nothing to do with Angry Birds or the familiar gameplay mechanics.
