Moomin mobile game-maker raises funding

Editor’s note: Updates throughout

Turku, Finland-based mobile game developer Snowfall has picked a particular niche aiming to be the No 1 Moomin games maker in the world. To help the firm with its challenge it has raised 1 million euros funding package from Frontier Singapore and a number of Finnish investors.

Moomin? you ask. Let us quote Moomin article on Wikipedia: The Moomins (Swedish: Mumintroll) are the central characters in a series of books and a comic strip by Swedish-speaking Finnish illustrator and writer Tove Jansson … They are a family of white, roundish fairy tale characters with large snouts that make them resemble hippopotamuses. The carefree and adventurous family live in their house in Moominvalley…”

But back to the gaming firm .

“The Moomin is a globally well-known brand for the whole family. So far, no one has created a gaming company around it, which would focus only on producing Moomin-themed mobile games. We saw a clear market niche in this,” says CEO Petri Elovaara.

“We see great growth potential in the mobile gaming field, and we are ready to give our full support to Snowfall!” said Roleff Kråkström, CEO of Moomin Characters, the company which holds rights to the characters.

Snowfall aims to combine soft values of Moomins with top gaming technology. The aim is to create Moomin games for different age groups, which could “bring families and people around the world close to each other.” The brand has been very popular in Japan and elsewhere in Asia.

“Regardless of the manner of gaming, we plan to create games around the Moomin theme with leading technology in the gaming field,” said Elovaara. “We constantly look for new investors and cooperation partners. Our aim is to become the biggest company in the world focused on Moomin mobile games.”

We wonder is there any competition out there?
