ClipMe in 15 Seconds

There’s a colourful selection of video messaging apps available, each of them having their own speciality; Just to name a few of the bigger players out there, Oovoo offers group calls for social animals, Tango combines IM, chat and video messages into a tight package while Camfrog connects you with total strangers.

Finnish ClipMe has a speciality of its own. As an application it’s more shifted towards recreational than practical use but that hardly defines how popular the app turns out to be.

ClipMe allows you to create 15 second video stories with friends. Each participating friend will make their own contribution to the video, adding up to the social aspect of the app. Once ready, the video can be shared over social media for everyone to see. To put it simple, it really is all about having fun.

Created by a group of students from Haaga-Helia, the original idea was to keep in touch with friends abroad in a more entertaining way. Ravi Kumar, CEO and founder of ClipMe, found potential for the app, especially among younger mobile device users. The app production was outsourced to India, where it was built for iOS platform, after which they commenced Beta testing. The Beta faze taught ClipMe many important improvements that needed to be implemented, such as the app tutorial and video management. The response was very positive though – people liked the app.

So did a rather unexpected Finnish celebrity from the music industry. Popular Rap musician Musta Barbaari took a liking to the short video application, which could be more than significant for the apps visibility, as well as being the perfect marketing channel for the target audience ClipMe is aiming for. The rapper is very popular among the youth and is known for strong social media activity.

ClipMe believes it is just the right kind of marketing for their product and they have initiated talks with other Finnish celebrities.

Short video apps have a good chance of going viral if the basic idea is good enough, and the time is right. Vine being a good example of such a phenomena. ClipMe is still a newcomer but they’ve gotten themselves a good start. They are currently looking for a €200 000 investment, mainly to launch a Android version of the app.
