Guide to SLUSH Side Events 2016

It’s that time of the year again in Helsinki, Finland. SLUSH is taking over the city next week, 15,000 techies, investors, media, corporates and all kinds of startup people will fill the Messukeskus venue, and during evenings lots of bars too. The event is massive and there surely is something for everyone. But let’s check now some of the most interesting Slush side events happening outside the main program. Focus is on the events that do not happen on the main days of Slush.

A fun fact from the past: 2015 during Finnish fintech startup MONI’s Slush shadow party, the sauna boat almost sunk and had to be evacuated due to too many party people onboard. Monday, Nov 28

9:00am – 4:00pm Microsoft Accelerator Startup Bootcamp Helsinki

The Startup Bootcamp Helsinki is targeted for early stage technology startups. Your startup should preferably be a SaaS-company (not required) situated somewhere between MVP/Prototype and early growth phase. Unfortunately, the application period is over already, but maybe you can still get in and join the event. At least make sure while you visit Flux that you play a game of Attack From Mars pinball machine.

11:00am – 5:00pm Nordic Brand Licensing Market 2016

20 Nordic brands will be showcasing for international licensing partners in the first conference focused on licensing Nordic brands within creative industries: games, design, animation, film, television, music, publishing, lifestyle and services. They have many international VIP guests joining. Tickets from 190€+vat.

2:00pm – 8:00pm Impact Day

The program at Finlandia Hall focuses on sharing lessons, insights and inspirational examples across the whole impact-driven ecosystem: startups & NGOs, impact investors, policymakers and startup hubs. The 2:00pm session is already fully booked and registration for the Main Stage part is closed, but maybe you can sneak in for the after-party? This is an official Slush event.

6:00pm – 8:15pm Stadi Talkers Toastmasters Public Speaking Workshop

Are you interested in practicing your communication and leadership skills? You are warmly welcomed to spend a Monday evening learning about the art of Public Speaking. You might just get those crucial last-minute tips for your pitch!

11:30am – 4:30pm Tonic16 – Food Tech Innovation

Do you like to eat food? I bet you do. Are you interested to know and see what’s happening now in foodtech and what’s coming up. Hear from the big players, researchers and of course from a good bunch of startups. 3D food printer, chocolate 3D printer, insects (as in protein), top chefs, children’s food, brainfood, Pulled Oats and more. 9:00am – 7:00pm Smash

Smash is dedicated to sport, technology and startups focusing on physical activity, health and sport. Smash offers a meeting place where sports, passion and technology will find each other. The idea of Smash is to improve athlete’s performance, fan experience and healthy lifestyle with technology. Tickets starting from 95€+vat

8:30am – 10:30am Game On! – The future of the UK gaming and VR landscape, financing and business opportunities

This is your chance to find out all you need to know over breakfast at the British Embassy about the future of the UK gaming industry, funding landscape and how to scale up internationally.

9:30am – 6:00pm Startup Ecosystem Development Workshop

The workshop is designed for those responsible for national, regional or city economic development – focused on economic growth via entrepreneurship, innovation, job creation and attracting investments. Also, the workshop provides practical knowledge and tools for all key stakeholders who actively take part in developing their local startup ecosystem, either from policy design, funding instrument or support services design, ecosystem management and coordination roles, as well as budgeting and capacity building. 10:00 am – 8:00 pm Blockchain Hackathon: Let’s Create a Trust Machine!

Participants are invited to work on different challenges that are related to the changing role of trust in business and society. How would you hack trust? If third parties are not necessary to ensure trust, what opportunities does that give us? If trust could be taken for granted (or automated), what would processes look like? What if bureaucracy did not exist? What if different parties worked flawlessly together? How can social and other contracts be changed with blockchain? The solutions could be in the areas of identity/reputation, finance, health care, regulatory/legal, governance, sustainability, user interface, and prediction, but could also be something completely different. 12:00 pm – 4:00 pm Viking Geeks – The Startup Documentary Premiere

Start your Slush in a movie theatre! Viking Geeks documentary is a window to the Nordic startups in Silicon Valley. A peak to the tough work of the entrepreneurs – chasing their dreams. Premieres are free – but you need to register because of the limited seating. There are two shows: at noon & 2 pm at Kino Andorra.

4:00 pm – 10:00 pm Go F**tech Yourself

This event starts the strong Slush fintech track and makes a great opportunity to meet the leading figures of the Nordic fintech scene in person. Short information bursts, discussions, enlightening panels and roasts. No boring slideshows, no long-winded presentations and no bullshit — just straight talk on what actually matters in fintech and where we’re headed to next. Free to attend.

5:00 pm – 8:00 pm Newsrooms X Social Media

This one is for journalists and media professionals. How can newsrooms benefit from social media? What can we learn from publishers’ success stories and what advice would you give journalist-to-journalist? They are gathering media professionals to exchange insights on how to engage audiences on social media and grow your digital business. Free to attend.

5:30 pm – 11:59 pm FUN Learning Lift Off

This space inspired lift off event brings together inspiring edtech startups, investors, education professionals, and a real astronaut on a mission to create a better future. Fun Learning is a philosophy that promotes the overall wellbeing of people and lays the foundation for lifelong learning. Learning happens when you love what you do when the environment is inspiring when you are appreciated for who you are and when you feel safe. Free to attend.

6:00 pm Developing a Vision for Your Startup Idea

You are passionate about a business idea, but don’t know what to do next? How do you develop your idea into a larger vision and start building? At this exclusive event, Adeo Ressi, Founder & CEO of the Founder Institute, visits us from Silicon Valley to teach aspiring entrepreneurs the components of good and bad startup ideas, discuss what it takes to develop a rough idea into a solid vision. He provides guidance on how to accelerate that vision into a sustainable company. Ressi will also hold Office Hours on Nov 30 at 9:00 am at Microsoft Flux.

Slush and Enter e-Estonia welcome you to the Official Opening Party of Slush 2016. Thrilling live acts and DJs from both sides of the Baltic Sea – from fabled godfathers of Estonian indie, Röövel Ööbik to Timo Kaukolampi, the reverend of the Finnish underground. The President of Estonia, Kersti Kaljulaid, will kick off the night. Free to attend.

Now take it fairly easy as the next morning the main event starts. But if you do not have booked meetings, have a blast and do not hold back!

During the day there are tonnes of side events inside Slush, or under the same roof at Holiday Inn hotel side etc. Check them from the official side events list (link in the end of this article). Countless dinners and parties in the evening.

Thursday, Dec 1

About half the amount of previous day, there are still plenty of side events inside and outside Slush. Dinners and parties, and yes, the main After Party of Slush, so hope you got some energy left for the night.

Friday, Dec 2

8:30 am – 4:00 pm Keys to success and growth capital in the US market

6:00 pm – 11:59 OKAY! // Open Knowlege Awesome Year Party

This year Open Knowledge Finland wants to invite the whole open knowledge community – including you – to an end of the year celebration on the “Right to know -day” (Tietämisen vapauden päivä) 2nd December. This celebration is the get-together event of the year for OKFI members, people working with open data and tools, and people that think open knowledge is important.
