Danish mobile database platform Realm, which just last week boasted with reaching one billion users for its product, won on Tuesday the Nordic Startup of the Year award.
The winners were selected by an international jury from over 800 nominees and more than 24,000 public votes from each of the five Nordic countries.
ArcticStartup won the award for the startup media of the year, while Icelandic Medilync, a cloud-based solution designed to make life easier for diabetics, won the People’s Choice award.
The countries most notoriously known for their startup culture, Sweden and Finland, won four awards each, while Iceland impressively compared to the size of the country took two prizes. Denmark got home with three awards and Norway with the prestigious Founder of the Year award.
Realm has become a key component of the global mobile infrastructure, and its used by mobile apps from Amazon, Google, eBay, Alibaba, Intel, Walmart, Cisco, NBC Universal or thousands of others.
Realm, a Y-Combinator (Summer 2011) company, has raised $29 million from Khosla Ventures, Scale VP, Andreessen Horowitz, Greylock, Redpoint, Ignition, SVAngel, Crunchfund and others. Realm was founded by Alexander Stigsen (CEO) and Bjarne Christiansen (COO), childhood friends from Denmark who were developers at Nokia, where they worked on optimising data storage for the plastic bar phones they all spent too much time playing Snake on it.
THE AWARDS:
