Realm Boasts With 1 Bln Users

Mobile data platform Realm, founded by two Danish friends, said on Wednesday it has reached 1-billion user milestone and has now more than 100,000 active developers using it.

Only Facebook and Amazon Web Services can talk of 1 billion users and at the same time the 2-year old Realm is growing twice as fast as Microsoft’s Xamarin, Adobe’s PhoneGap, and Unity.

“Realm has become a key component of the global mobile infrastructure: if you order a latte on the Starbucks app, post a video on Vine, watch NFL highlights on your phone – or use mobile apps from Amazon, Google, eBay, Alibaba, Intel, Walmart, Cisco, NBC Universal or thousands of others – you’re one of the billion,” the company said.

Realm is a Y-Combinator (Summer 2011) company, which has raised $29 million from Khosla Ventures, Scale VP, Andreessen Horowitz, Greylock, Redpoint, Ignition, SVAngel, Crunchfund and others.

Realm was founded by Alexander Stigsen (CEO) and Bjarne Christiansen (COO), childhood friends from Denmark who were developers at Nokia, where they worked on optimising data storage for the plastic bar phones we all spent too much time playing snake on.

“They discovered that if you applied similar storage optimisation techniques to modern smart phones, you could make data fit into much less memory, making data access much faster, and forever removing the need for users to ever see a loading spinner indicator. This core innovation is the foundation of their database technology, and it has helped Realm build a successful company serving the needs of mobile developers at startups like Hipmunk to enterprise companies like Google,” the company said.
