Nokia has today unveiled a new, all touch screen, phone in Singapore. The phone is MeeGo based and is the much awaited phone from that line of devices. It will be out later this year. Nokia’s N9 is available with more specs on their promotional page with a “design story” -video by Marko Ahtisaari, the SVP of Nokia’s design.
Ahtisaari also stated that the version of MeeGo is able to run QT applications, an environment that has already been shipped on some 100 million phones. The N9 also has an 8 megapixel still camera that also captures high-definition video.
The phone’s body is machined out of a single piece of polycarbonate, designed to create the best working antenna. Ahtisaari even went on to state that “unlike some competitor products, you don’t need to hold it a special way to make reliable phone calls”, aiming at Apple’s antennagate from last summer with the comment.
Furthermore, the device will come with NFC (near field communication) technology, where you will be able to pair a bluetooth headset, for example, just by touching the device with the accessory. The phone will be available in black, cyan and magenta.
Furthermore, Nokia has finally shown some of its design thinking in a new and refreshing way in the N9’s UI. It’s all about swiping. Even the curved glass supports this better than a straight glass, according to the company.
The three “home” views available with a swipe on the phone are; everything your friends are doing (a stream of social media activity), everything you can do (the traditional icon menu) and everything you’ve done in the past (a grid of open applications).
Also, the phone comes preloaded with an interesting array of applications, including Vimeo, Twitter, Facebook and Angry Birds Magic. The full list of apps it comes preloaded with is available on the Nokia Swipe page.
It’s still too early after the announcement to say what kind of a reception this device will receive in the consumer markets, but it does show a new kind of thinking in many perspectives. A very new and fresh approach to traditional ways of thinking about a phone. Coming from Nokia, this could signal of new things to come and also showcase their design thinking regarding the Windows Phone products.
