Vivaldi Browser Launches, Taking On Chrome, Firefox

Vivaldi launched on Wednesday its long-awaited browser for heavy web-users, taking on Google’s Chrome and Firefox.

Vivaldi started in 2014 to build a user-focused web browser and launched the first technical preview in January 2015. Already before today’s launch to the general public it counts downloads in million.

“We set out on a mission to make web browsers powerful again,” Vivaldi CEO Jon von Tetzchner , who founded and built up Opera browser, said in a statement.

“Everything we build is in service of the user. We have no investors and their agendas to dictate our progress. There’s no exit strategy and we’re here to stay. All we want to do is give people a browser they’re proud to use and that we’re proud to call Vivaldi.”

For fans there are many links to the original Opera Software, which is the world’s No 5 browser firm after household names Google Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft and Apple Safari. Von Tetzchner admits the links are there.

“So Vivaldi 1.0 is both a throwback and a look ahead. It’s a ‘Modern Classic’ designed to help our users get the most out of all the time they spend with their browser,” he said.

To test all the features like tab stacks, saved sessions, notes, shortcuts or speed dial, its best to go and download it and have your say.
