Ukrainian software development firm MacPaw has acquired Finnish The Unarchiver for an undisclosed sum. Kiev-based developers of Setapp bought the Unarchiver, one of the top file-extraction utilities for Mac users, which was ranked among top free apps on App Store.
The Unarchiver is an archive extraction program for macOS. It is designed to handle more formats than the native macOS Archive Utility, and to better fit in with Finder design. It can also handle file names in foreign character sets, created with non-English versions of other operating systems.
Dag Ågren, the creator of The Unarchiver designed it more than ten years ago. He never expected this app to appear on the top of the Mac App Store and get millions of users from all over the world. However, dues to “other factors in life” Ågren chose to focus on other projects leaving the Unarchiver almost unattended.
“I felt it is time to hand the flag over to someone else who can take care of them properly, and make sure they stay around for a long time still,” admitted Ågren.
When MacPaw team found out that Ågren had no time to work on the million users Unarchiver, they came in with an offer and decided to take over the app. MacPaw aims to maintain and develop The Unarchiver further. They also plan to introduce a couple of new features and updates and localize the app into popular languages. As before, the Unarchiver will be free for all Mac users.
